The Gentlemen's Wager

As we approach the biggest sporting event in America, I start to think about what wild commercials will be gracing our television sets at 30 second intervals and at a cost of well above $1 million. The Clydesdales are getting brushed and primped, some cosmetically enhanced girl is getting shoe-horned into some sexy dress and a hapless nerd is probably getting flung around a commercial set in the name of the Super Bowl. I can't wait for my tweet-athon during the show. Oh, and the watching the game, of course!

Recently, ESPN came out with a very Super Bowl-like ad that really made me chuckle. The theme of the ad was "Gentlemen Wagers," and the focus was comical bets agreed upon by sports fanatic friends designed to humiliate. It is a great ad touching on the timely tradition of male bonding through embarrassing endeavors. My favorite was the poor loser dropped off in a rough neighborhood in nothing but a diaper and bonnet!

The ad was done by the genius of Wieden + Kennedy as part of the "It's Not Crazy, It's Sports" campaign. It definitely stays on brand and creates a memorable spot promoting its core business: sports and sports related commentary. Kudos to the guys at W+K - can't wait to see what you have cooked up this season for the Super Bowl!
